Alternative to Terra Cotta

GFRC is a Great Alternative to Terra Cotta

GFRC was in the news recently. An article about a restoration project in Buffalo, NY was tasked with determining how to restore its terra cotta façade.

Originally, they explored purchasing terra cotta again and simply replacing the exterior with new, higher quality material. But what they quickly found was that in today’s market, terra cotta is too expensive. In addition, terra cotta can occasionally be a fragile material that might need to be replaced again in the not too distant future.

Why Not GFRC?

The restoration team originally wanted to go straight to GFRC, but were met with resistance because those in the area were largely unfamiliar with the material and wanted to make sure it could withstand Buffalo’s harsher climate. But GFRC is:

  • Cheaper
  • Longer Lasting
  • High Quality

GFRC can pour into molds cleanly and look exactly like terra cotta, but for a lower price. It made far more sense for their restoration project, and so they received approval to use GFRC as an alternative to terra cotta.
